CASA volunteers advocate on behalf of the county’s abused and neglected children and work to ensure that needed services and assistance are made available to these children while helping them move toward safe and permanent homes as quickly as possible.  CASA volunteers are assigned to only one case; either one child or one family of children at a time, which allows them to devote an enormous amount of time to that child so that he/she does not slip through the cracks of the judicial and child welfare systems.  In short, the CASA volunteer is an open-minded and unbiased voice for the child in the court process and a consistent and caring person in the child’s life.  Currently, CASA for Children of Bergen County is assigned to only about one third of the more than 600 children removed from their homes in Bergen County each year, but its goal is to serve more.  Additional funds will allow the program to recruit, train and supervise more volunteers to help more children.  If interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, please visit the website and sign up for an information session.

This event coincides with National Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness month. CASA is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. Although affiliated with National CASA and the NJ State CASA program, CASA for Children of Bergen County is solely responsible for raising all of the funds needed to run the program each year.  In recent years, Bergen CASA’s funding has been reduced and donations are essential to maintain the program and/or implement a plan for growth.
