What is the Goree All-String Band?
First, it's the winner of the Kevin Spacey Foundation Musical Theater Artist of Choice Grant for the New York Music Festival.
Second it's a new musical that's about something quite unique. A bunch of women in the year 1928 making music. Behind bars. Who did not know how to play music. To get out. And, it's inspired by a a true story.
Back in 1938 when people were huddled around the family radio the Goree All-Girl String Band was what people were listening to in Texas. The band was composed of female inmates, we're not talking Orange is the New Black, but inmates who wanted to get out and saw music as their path to freedom. Do they succeed?
The new musical features an original country score, by Artie Sievers. Based on a book by Michael Bradley Block, he also wrote the lyrics.
