The awards are a bicoastal tradition for 7 years. This year's West Coast honorees are Anna Kendrick, Salma Hayek Pinault, Oprah Winfrey, Gwyneth Paltrow and YouTube CEO Susan Sojcicki. Earlier this year, the NY Lifetime of Impact honorees were Glenn Close, Lena Dunham, Whoopi Goldberg, Rachel Weisz and Kim Kardashian West.
This event gives the women an opportunity to showcase and spread the word about the causes they find most important. At the April NY event, Lena Dunham gave an excellent and emotional speech about GEMS, The Girls Educational and Mentoring Services, which helps girls who have been victims of assault and other crimes against their bodies. The awards are given by Variety in conjunction with Lifetime Television, The award show is run in conjunction with Variety's Women's Impact Report which reports on the status or and pays tribute to women who are making strides in entertainment in front of and behind the scenes.
As part of the award each honoree receives a contribution to her charity.
