Mikaela Phillips started her journey in entertainment at the age of 6, This is a woman who knew what she wanted to do in life, and now she is a successful actor and producer. She has produced films and series independently and for the likes of Netflix, ViacomCBS, MTV and more.
An Australian native, she started her career as a host on Afterbuzz TV USA. She then became well-known for starring as Faith Morgan in the TV Drama Series Counter Play (2016–2018), which she also executive produced alongside her mother, writer/director Chrys Phillips.
Mikaela tells us about her inspiration, her words for others and about new newest film.
Suzee: Tell me about your most recent project, Zavier and the Nightkeeper. What inspired you?
Mikaela Phillips: My recent movie reflects the kind of stories I’m drawn to as a producer - projects that are driven by bold world-building, relatability, and a broad storytelling and commercial appeal. Zavier and the Nightkeeper, a feature film slated for release in 2026, is a perfect example of that.
What excites me most about this project is its scope and storytelling ambition. I’m deeply drawn to cinematic worlds that allow audiences to fully escape while still connecting to very human themes, and Zavier and the Nightkeeper does exactly that.
What a Producer Dreams of
Every producer dreams of the opportunity to work on a production that becomes the next cultural phenomenon - something in the lineage of Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, or Twilight. What makes Zavier and the Nightkeeper especially exciting is the rich tapestry of story it stems from: the best-selling Magic Wars Saga book series by Chrys Phillips.
Positioned as intellectual property with the potential to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it represents an extraordinary opportunity to adapt a world that extends far beyond the screen - into merchandising, gaming, and immersive experiences that allow audiences to engage beyond the screen. Working alongside the creator and producing team is both creatively energizing and deeply fulfilling.
Suzee: Tell me about your podcast starring Eric Roberts. He is such a prolific actor, I've interviewed him at a New York area film festival a few years back.
Mikaela Phillips: Alongside that, I recently produced Seduction, a five-episode audio drama podcast starring Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts (The Pope of Greenwich Village), Russell Todd (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter), Paola Paulin (Ballers, Tax Collector), Jamaal Lewis (Barbie), and rounded out by an exceptional ensemble cast. This project allowed me to explore storytelling in a different medium, and the response has been incredibly encouraging, premiering to five-star ratings. It’s also sparked conversation of early discussions about adapting it for the screen, which speaks to the strength of the emotive topics in the story.

Mikaela Phillips: Looking ahead to 2026, I have several upcoming projects I’m excited to tease. The Magic Wars Saga continues to expand, along with a new scripted podcast titled Mothers of Ridgewood, which explores the lives of layered, devious and flawed suburban characters. I’ll also be producing a passion-project film that will enter the festival circuit and focuses on the severity, loss, and very real dangers of texting and driving. Other projects on the slate I can’t announce yet but stay tuned for more!
Suzee: You have some great advice, that I have found as well to be true in my career in entertainment as well. Let's talk about that.
On Being Self-Driven
I’d say this: be self-driven, don’t give up, and be prepared to work harder than the people around you. There were plenty of times I chose work over social plans because I understood that in the early stages, you’re not just building projects - you’re building a reputation.
Yes to Opportunities
I said yes to opportunities because I recognized their potential and trusted my ability to rise to the challenge. I was intentional about putting myself in rooms and opportunities where I could grow, expand my skill set, leverage as a stepping stone and create momentum.
Sacrifice and Dedication
I will say, I think someone either has it or you don’t - I’ve seen many people want it but not put in the hours, sacrifice, and dedication required. Those who make excuses when it gets tough rarely get to the other side. And the best part of this work is breaking through that hard part and knowing you came out triumphant!
Treat Everyone with Respect
Lastly just as important - treat everyone with the same respect, no matter their role. I make it a point to introduce myself to everyone I meet, whether it’s A-list talent, crew, assistants, photographers, or event organizers.
"You never know who knows who, or who might open a door for you down the line, and genuine kindness and professionalism always leave a lasting impression."
Suzee: What is the best advice you have ever been given, career or other?
Honestly, probably anything my mother has ever said to me haha. The best advice I’ve ever received is simply: just be yourself. Early in my career, when we first came to LA, people told me I should lose my Australian accent. I’m so glad I didn’t listen. Keeping it not only felt true to who I am, it’s also what makes me stand out and unique. Being authentic, showing up as yourself, and trusting your own instincts has served me far more than trying to fit into someone else’s idea of who I should be.
Suzee: What is in the future for you, career or personal?
I’m really excited for the future, both personally and professionally. On my upcoming slate, I have one project that we plan on entering for Golden Globe consideration, and another of the scale to compete for an Oscar or Emmy. Big things are coming!

Best part about being the age you are now: I feel like I’m at the perfect age - I’ve done the hard yards, I’m thriving in my career, and I love my friends and social life. I’ve learned a lot, I know how to go after what I want and I’m excited for everything that’s still to come!
