On a sunny September day in Hillsdale, NJ, amid supporters and family, a street was named after Joan D'Alessandro, a young girl whose life was taken by a neighbor many years ago while delivering Girl Scout cookies. Her mom, Rosemarie, spent her life in remembrance of her daughter's tragic death by inspiring and working towards legislation aimed at keeping killers of children behind bars. She also started a foundation to help teach kids how to be safer as well as provide programs for children in need. Every year Joan's Joy Foundation holds a free Safety Fest with speakers, events for kids, some freebies and a basket raffle. It's a fun afternoon that's information as well.
