Inspiration for Women - The Art of Self: A Decade of Becoming - One Woman's Journey in Midlife to Rediscover and Re-engergize Her Future

By Zonie LeSane

There comes a moment in life when achievement is no longer enough. You begin asking different questions.

Who am I beneath the titles?
What have my experiences taught me?
What do I want the next chapter of my life to become?
For me, those questions became The Art of Self.

Years ago, I was inspired by The Art of War and later by The Art of War for Women. Those books taught me about strategy, discipline, observation, and resilience. But as I reflected on my own life, I realized I wasn't trying to win battles against other people.

I was trying to understand myself.

The Art of Self became my journey inward. It was born through triumphs and heartbreak, through extraordinary friendships and difficult goodbyes, through leadership, service, motherhood, and moments when I wasn't sure I would survive.

There were surgeries where I wondered if I would wake up.
There were seasons when I questioned my purpose.

There were times I looked around and realized that everyone knew the professional version of me, but very few knew the woman I was still becoming.

Those experiences changed me. They taught me that a second chance at life isn't simply about surviving.

It is about choosing to live differently.
To eat differently.
To think differently.
To love differently.
To forgive differently.
To become curious again.

Of all the principles within The Art of Self, curiosity may be the one I treasure most. Curiosity asks us to remain students of life, even after decades of experience. It reminds us that wisdom doesn't come from believing we have all the answers. It comes from remaining open to new questions. That is why Alice in Wonderland became one of my favorite inspirations.

Alice wasn't lost because she lacked intelligence.
She was discovering who she was.
She questioned everything.
She challenged assumptions.
She grew through every unexpected encounter.

Eventually, she found the courage to stand before the Queen of Hearts—not because she had become fearless, but because she had finally become herself.

I believe many of us are living our own version of Wonderland. We navigate careers, relationships, family, success, disappointment, illness, joy, and reinvention. Each chapter asks us the same question:
Who are you becoming?

The Art of Self is my answer to that question.
It isn't a manual.
It isn't self-help.
It is an invitation.
An invitation to pause.
To reflect.
To rediscover curiosity.
To embrace humor.
To lead with gratitude.
To protect your peace.
To understand that becoming your authentic self is not a destination.

It is a lifelong practice.

Come back for more as I continue the conversation, because I believe the greatest work we will ever create......is ourselves.
