Well she had been talking about producing this show for months on THE VIEW, so of course, being the Joy Behar fan that I am I had to go see My First Ex-Husband as soon as it came out. It is playing at the MMAC Theater in New York City until April 20th, 2025.
Given that Joy started as a comedian (well she was a teacher also) it's no surprise that this comedian extraordinaire turned the tables on a mainstay of male comedian humor - wives. Who can forget the classic line, "Take my wife - PLEASE!!"
So this show turns the tables. Written by Joy Behar with her exceptional brand of humor, truth and storytelling, the show is several stories of women's ex-husbands, beautifully and believable delivered by a bevy of well-known and accomplished women in the arts and entertainment. For this first rendition, the cast was Joy Behar, Susie Essman, Tovah Feldshuh and Adrienne C. Moore.
.
Each of the stories were so well-told that it was hard to imagine that the actress was not telling her OWN story. The stories all had substance. They were a slice of life of a real women - with vivid details so that one could fully imagine the scenario. They were powerful. And if you are married, you may chuckle or grimace at some shared experiences. There was humor, but there was also fabulous storytelling.
The show will rotate its headliners. The next show, running February 26th - March 23rd 2025 will feature Judy Gold, Susan Lucci, Cathy Moriarty, and Tonya Pinkins. The last installment will be Talia Balsam, Veanne Cox, Jackie Hoffman and Andrea Nevado from March 26th to April 20th, 2025.
I will be going back to see another round.
